My favorite quote about Gordon Bok is, "If the sea had a voice with which to sing, it would be the voice of Gordon Bok." Gordon Bok has thrilled Ithaca audiences for a generation with his rich, resonant voice and masterful playing of both 6- and 12-string guitars. An instrument maker, he will likely bring to stage one of his own inventions, the cellamba (a 6-string fretted cello), and a whistle or two.

As you might expect from a resident of coastal Maine who has lived and worked on boats for a significant part of his life, many of Bok's songs and stories do concern the sea, ships, and sailors. Rather than an evening of sea shanties, however, a concert by Gordon Bok will feature songs and ballads and dance tunes. He can be both somber and haunting or droll and playful. Some of his songs tell of real people; other conjure up mythical creatures. His images are of hard work but also of dreams. Some are old; others borrowed; most his own. All somehow seem large and timeless.

Gordon Bok first gained fame as the original first mate on Pete Seeger's sloop "Clearwater," and has since recorded over 30 albums, both solo and with many other musicians. He has long been a favorite in Ithaca, but it has been five years since he was last in town. Please join the Cornell Folk Song Club in a hearty welcome for Gordon Bok.

Tickets are available at Ithaca Guitar Works, Greenstar Co-op, Small World Music, Colophon Books, and, if any are left, at the door. You may also order tickets online and by mail: SASE to CFSC, PO Box 481, Ithaca, NY 14851.
