Ithaca, NY: Who could have imagined in 1973, that after thirty one years Sweet Honey In The Rock would still be standing proud and strong as a voice for change? The Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University proudly presents Sweet Honey In The Rock the internationally renowned Grammy Award winning a cappella ensemble now entering its fourth decade.

Sweet Honey In The Rock is rooted in a deeply held commitment to create music out of the rich textures of African American legacy and traditions. They possess a stunning vocal prowess that captures the complex sounds of Blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, Hip Hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation. Sweet Honey's collective voice, occasionally accompanied by hand percussion instruments, produces a sound filled with soulful harmonies and intricate rhythms.

The women who comprise Sweet Honey are more than entertainers. They are a quintet of artists dedicated to preserving and celebrating African American culture and singing traditions. They are poets and activists who cannot remain silent on the most pressing contemporary issues. Sweet Honey members continuously evolve as musicians, composers, arrangers, singers, and storytellers, retaining an unmistakable quality of sound, yet always sounding fresh.

The Africana Studies and Research Center, celebrating the opening of its new building and its 35th anniversary, is proud to present Sweet Honey In The Rock. As Professor Salah M. Hassan, the acting director of Africana Center affirms, "Outreach and linkages to the larger Ithaca community have been integral to our mission as a Center, which is rooted in the struggle of our students and members of our community who fought very hard 35 years ago to establish the Center. We are, therefore, very proud to present the concert as a benefit to the Village at Ithaca in celebration of such a momentous occasion."

Sweet Honey In The Rock will be performing in Ithaca at the Historic State Theatre on Sunday, April 17, 2005 at 7pm. Tickets are available at The Ticket Center 108 North Cayuga Street, Ithaca, NY. This concert is organized in celebration of the new building of the Africana Studies and Research Center, and is presented as a benefit for The Village At Ithaca, a non profit grass roots initiative.

The concert is sign interpreted.
